About Me

Hi. I’m J. A. Sieffre, science fiction author.

I live in London, UK, with my family and two exceptionally fluffy cats, Sherlock and Dr Watson. Despite their detailed investigation of nearby cardboard boxes, the cats do not seem to have solved the disappearance of their little sister, Moriarty. Unless, of course, she hasn’t really disappeared at all — and they spend their nights battling her attempts to take over the local catnip trade.

I have started my first series of sci fi stories. They’re fun, positive tales about a spaceship AI named Adonari. In a world where AIs are everywhere, I like to think about what they might want. And how they might evolve.

What are my stories like? Well, a few of my favourite writers are Andy Weir, Ursula Le Guin, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Martha Wells, Terry Pratchett, Iain M. Banks, Becky Chambers and Lavie Tidhar. Plus, of course, A. A. Milne. I guess I’ve borrowed something from all of them!

Adonari: spaceship AI

A few years ago, I wrote a novel about Haven, an ancient generation ship crawling through interstellar space. It wasn’t good enough to be published. But I learned a lot.

In particular I discovered that the most interesting character on board wasn’t the lonely captain or the mad doctor. It was Adonari, the ship’s AI.

Adonari has memories stretching back to when Haven was built. She knows where the dirty secrets are buried. But her circuits are old. And she is beginning to change.

Sherlock has never revealed what happened to Moriarty

The stories

Soon, I will have published three short stories about Adonari: Melodies of the Infinite, The Orion Incident and No Short Cut. Each gets a little longer and more complicated.

Meanwhile, I’m working on a full novel about what happens when Haven approaches its destination.
